HIFU and Dr. Kevin Blumenthal Featured on Larry King Profile Series
We’re happy to announce that the HIFU, or high intensity focused ultrasound, treatment will finally be getting the publicity it deserves. The HIFU treatment is a minimally invasive prostate cancer treatment that offers fewer side effects than surgery and other options. While the procedure has been performed for years, it will finally be brought into the public eye for its many benefits. The HIFU program, along with our own Dr. Kevin Blumenthal, will be highlighted on the Discovery Channel’s Larry King Profile Series. The episode aired Wednesday, June 26 at 7:00 a.m.
The program features a HIFU treatment performed by Dr. Blumenthal at the Doctors Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas. Dr. Blumenthal has been performing these HIFU procedures for three years after being trained and mentored by Dr. Stephen Scionti, one of the pioneers of the field and a current HIFU surgeon in North America.
The HIFU procedure that’s highlighted in the show was performed by Dr. Blumenthal using a Sonablate 500. More than 12,000 men have received HIFU treatment using the Sonablate 500 HIFU system. This system is approved for use in more than 30 countries outside the United States. Currently in the United States, the Sonablate 500 is being studied for prostate cancer treatment. We’re hoping for the approval of this procedure in the U.S. in the near future.
It’s estimated by the American Cancer Society that more than 230,900 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in America alone every year. It’s the second leading cause of death in men after lung cancer. In this program, Dr. Blumenthal emphasizes the importance of cutting edge technologies in prostate cancer treatment, like the HIFU procedure. While surgery and radiation therapy have been the most frequent treatments used for prostate cancer patients, they can be invasive and cause side effects like impotence and bladder incontinence. The HIFU treatment is starting to get attention in the medical community because it’s minimally invasive and allows the patient to preserve a higher quality of life after the procedure has been performed.
